Namibia, Khomas Region

About Windhoek

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia, situated in the central part of the country within the Khomas Region. It is a modern urban area that serves as the nation's political, economic, and cultural heart. The city is notable for its unique blend of German colonial architecture and contemporary African culture, set against a dramatic highland landscape.

Basic information

The settlement was officially founded in 1890 by German Imperial Army Captain Curt von François as a military fort. Key architectural features include numerous buildings from the German colonial era, such as the Christuskirche and the Alte Feste, constructed in a neo-baroque and Wilhelmine style. Windhoek functions as the administrative capital of Namibia and is a major hub for commerce, government, and transportation. It has no specific protected status as it is a fully developed metropolitan area.

Location

Windhoek is the primary transportation hub of Namibia. It is served by Hosea Kutako International Airport, located 45 kilometers east of the city center. The city is connected by paved national highways from all major directions. It features a full range of tourist infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants, museums, and a well-developed urban road network. The city is accessible year-round, though the summer months from November to March can be very hot.

Nature

Windhoek is located in a semi-arid climatic region at an elevation of approximately 1,700 meters above sea level, within a basin surrounded by the Eros and Auas mountain ranges. The natural vegetation consists primarily of dry savanna and scrubland. The area experiences hot days and cool nights with low annual rainfall. Human influence is dominant, as it is a fully developed city, though some surrounding natural landscapes remain. Wildlife is largely confined to smaller species adapted to urban environments.

Story

The area was originally a permanent spring known as ǀAi-ǁGams, used by indigenous communities. The modern city's history began with the construction of the Alte Feste fort by the German Schutztruppe, establishing it as the capital of German South West Africa. It served as a critical administrative center during the colonial period. Following World War I, it came under South African administration. Windhoek was central to the Namibian struggle for independence, which was achieved in 1990, with the city being declared the capital of the new Republic of Namibia.
